I have been told by my dealer that in the early years of Savage availability they didn't sell too well. Then when the cruiser craze began in the early 90's they reintroduced it and since then it sells quite well, which doesn't surprise me as it's very affordable, it's unique, and it's such an easy riding/handling/maintenance machine. Though I've wistfully looked at Shadows and Viragos and V-Stars, my Savage always wins out due to it's great looks and its simplicity. It's the first bike I've owned in 25 years and I have a blast on it, and get lots of compliments on its looks and character. That's fun, too.
